As local food continues to grow in popularity, so does the number of
farmers markets in the Twin Cities. But local food goes beyond just
taste: New mini-markets in Minneapolis neighborhoods aim to increase
access to healthy, local, and organic food.
A project organized by the locally based
Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, the Mini Farmers Market Project has grown from six markets in 2008 to 12 markets in 2009 to more than 20 mini markets this year.
While also helping to support farmers, the mini farmers markets are located in neighborhoods that have limited access to healthy foods, and the majority are authorized to accept WIC and Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) food assistance coupons. Five or fewer farmers sell locally grown vegetables, fruits, and flowers at the mini markets, which are located in community centers, senior housing facilities, hospitals, educational institutions, churches and other neighborhood hubs.
